Marriage and Sexuality (Hebrews 13:4)

Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.” (Hebrews 13:4, ESV)

The other day, I saw a post from a so-called church. It said, “The Bible isn’t the Word of God” but it was, “a product of community.” After further examination, I discovered that the church was a self-described progressive church that acknowledged various expressions of human sexuality as legitimate, even though they were outside the norm of biblically defined marriage.

God established the institution of marriage from the beginning. In Genesis, we read, “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh” (Genesis 2:24, AV). The institution of marriage is foundational to God’s order of creation. It is foundational to family and an orderly society. Jesus specifically reinforced this institution (Matt 19:5; Mark 10:6).

Yet, today there is an attack on the institution of family. This attack has been initiated by Satan who desires to see the institutions of God undermined. This attack on biblical marriage has a destructive effect on the foundation of society, the family. One of the greatest ways the devil attacks the institution of marriage is through man’s fleshly desires, by perverting human sexuality. By this I mean luring people to satisfy their sensual appetites outside the bounds of biblical.

Sexual immorality and adultery involve any form of human sexuality outside of biblical marriage. Sexual sin in this area results in much divorce, divided homes, and adversely effects children in these homes.

The thing that grieves me so much is that I see the progressive movement entering professing Christianity. Churches are springing up that hold to permissive views of human sexuality outside of biblical marriage. Moreover, professing Christians are also moving to this dangerous viewpoint.

Yet, all of this leads to a much deeper issue. It is the denial of absolute moral truth. When people deny that the Bible is God’s word, they deny an absolute standard for morality. Let me say, for truth to be absolute, it must be so foundational that it can never change. If it changes, it is not absolute. It cannot change due to time. It cannot change due to location. It cannot change due to circumstance. It cannot change due to cultural mores. It cannot change due to government legislation. Absolute truth is absolute truth, unchangeable proceeding from the Supreme Lawgiver, our eternal and immutable God.

Sometimes people do not like the truth. Yet what we like will not change the truth. It is a truth that things will fall from heights and break when they hit the ground. If we are falling from a great height, we would not like the truth of gravity, but our likes or dislikes will not change the truth. When we hit the ground, we will get hurt.

The truth is that God instituted marriage as between one man and one woman. Moreover, He determined that human sexuality was to be confined to man and woman in biblical marriage. Everything outside of this institution is wrong. This is not my opinion alone. It is what the Bible states. The Bible is God’s word. Hold to the absolute truth.
