Footstool (Hebrews 10:13-14)

From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.” (Hebrews 10:13–14, KJV 1900)

Since the fall, the world has been full of injustices. Lawless people have always taken advantage of others. A conman takes an elderly widow’s savings. The business man embezzles from his company. The politician breaks the law and uses his influence to get away with it. The murderer, the liar, the immoral, and all lawless people typify this problem.

In the same category are those who are enemies of Christ, the ungodly, the blasphemer and those opposed to God and His holy purposes. They overtly preach against the gospel. They move to legislate and approve moral standards in direct opposition to the holy ordinances of God. They persecute those who call themselves Christians.

They work in subtle ways to influence this world away from true faith in God. They work through deception by persuading people to believe the lie. That which is good they call evil and that which is evil they call good. In doing so they confuse and lead multitudes astray. Through this effort multitudes malign the moral precepts of Scripture. Multitudes look negatively at those who hold a high value on life, marriage, and God’s word. Where will this end?

Behind all this is the adversary of our faith, the devil. He and his demonic host are seeking to destroy our faith. They use deception and destruction wrought by people who have followed the lie. Satan realizes that a house divided cannot stand and he is working to divide people from God. Moreover, entire nations have bought into this deception so that we have nations and people divided.

You might say that we are in a mess. However, even amidst this apparent chaos, God has a sovereign plan. The atoning work of Jesus was the epoch event in this plan where He defeated death and the devil (Heb 2:14). Yet, the Scriptures also speak of a day of judgment to come, a terrible day for the ungodly. Here the author gives us a picture of a future time of ultimate victory.

The writer of Hebrews indicates that Jesus has entered the holiest place in the heavens and sat down at the right hand of God. In this position, He continuously intercedes for those of true faith. Moreover, in this picture, the author indicates there is a time when Christ’s enemies shall be made a footstool. This is a picture of the enemies being brought into complete subjection, being placed beneath Christ’s feet.

Jesus spoke of this time after the time of great tribulation, when He will come again riding on the clouds of heaven with great power and glory (Matt 24:27-31). Then Christ will have those of true faith raised and gathered from the ends of heaven. Yet, the people of the earth will tremble and mourn at His coming. The nations will wilt in fear. and all His enemies will be placed in complete subjection. He will make all his enemies, the people, the nations, the devil and his demonic host, His footstool.

Are you concerned about the state of this world today? The injustices, the deception, the rebellion, the ungodliness. Do not despair. God is in control. Christ shall return in complete victory and the enemies of the cross shall be brought into subjection. What can we do now? Pray for the return of Jesus and proclaim the truth of God. Do not compromise on the truth of God. His truth is absolute and unchanging.
