Transcendent God (Romans 11:33-34)

O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counseller?” (Romans 11:33–34, KJV 1900)

I studied and met some very intelligent people in my day. These are people that I admire and, in some ways, would aspire to have the depth of their intellect. I never met Albert Einstein, but when I was in college, studying engineering, I had a mandatory class in Nuclear Physics. In this class, we had to learn and understand Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. In this class we also had to learn or rather memorize his mathematical derivation of the theory. Well, it was complicated and beyond me. I had to take the course twice in order to meet the requirements for graduation.

While many consider Einstein to have been a genius, what he knew pales in comparison to our God. Paul said it, how unsearchable are His, God’s “judgments, and his ways past finding out.” God is incomprehensible. In Him we find an infinite depth of riches, wisdom and knowledge. No one can grasp the depth of His decrees and His ways. He is transcendent, beyond human comprehension.

We can see this as we study the Scriptures. Paul spent the entire previous part of the letter to the Romans treating the doctrine of the salvation of fallen man. When we comprehend how God has worked throughout human history to fulfill His redemptive plan for man, it is mind boggling. Every bit of this plan is exactly and perfectly woven from Genesis through Revelation. What we see and can comprehend is beyond genius. To recount the entire plan would be too lengthy for this short devotion, but consider it all.

Consider the prophesies, the covenants, the nation of Israel, the incarnation of the God-Man, Jesus, Jesus’ sinless life, Israel’s rejection of the Messiah, Christ’s atoning sacrifice, the burial and resurrection, His ascension, the Holy Spirit, the salvation of Gentiles to provoke Israel to jealousy, the return of Jesus and the ultimate salvation of Israel as a nation. I am telling you that no mortal man could pull this off. Only infinitely intelligent and omnipotent God could establish a sovereign plan that would work throughout human history, to make salvation available to all, both Jew and Gentile.

Our God is beyond human comprehension. He is transcendent. Rejoice that God has brought you who believe into this great salvation.
