“There is none like you, O Lord; you are great, and your name is great in might. Who would not fear you, O King of the nations? For this is your due; for among all the wise ones of the nations and in all their kingdoms there is none like you. . . But the Lord is the true God; he is the living God and the everlasting King. At his wrath the earth quakes, and the nations cannot endure his indignation.” (Jeremiah 10:6-7, 10, ESV)
As a young man, I often contemplated greatness. I thought of what it would be like to be great myself. I considered some of the people who made a difference in our world, great inventors who changed the world, so to speak. I pursued greatness. I wanted to be great. As I graduated from college and was commissioned into the United States Army, I wanted to be a great military leader, to become a general of an army fighting for a noble cause.
However, at that time I did not understand true greatness. I thought that greatness was reserved for the smartest, or wisest, or wealthiest, or most powerful people. Yet I was looking for these things on a horizontal plane. I looked for these things in mortal people with the hopes that I could somehow aspire to greatness myself.
Then I had a revelation. Sitting on a bed in a Minneapolis hotel room, I read a Gideon hotel Bible. It was there that I encountered true greatness. The Indiana Bible College wrote a song titled, No One Higher. Towards the end of the song these lyrics are repeated five times.
There is no one higher, No one greater
No one like our God
There is none more able, Christ our Savior
Great and glorious
Sitting on that hotel room bed, I met the greatest person by faith, the Lord our God and Savior. In this passage, Jeremiah communicated this truth. He stated that there is none like our God. Our God is infinite in power who spoke all things into existence. He is the ruler sovereign over all. He is infinite in knowledge and wisdom; the accumulative intelligence of every person who has ever lived still falls infinitely short of our God. He is the embodiment of absolute truth; there is no hint of error in Him. He is the everlasting God; eternal with no beginning or end. He is present everywhere in all His divine attributes. I could go on, but time would not permit. We might just conclude that there is none like Him.
Because of who He is, those who know Him stand in awe. The lyrics of the song, “No One Higher,” captured the thought. Consider these words at the end of the song which should be the response of all who know Him.
And Lord we stand amazed in Your presence
Astounded by Your mercy and love
Our hands are lifted high in surrender
Your grace for me is always enough
There is no one higher than our God
There is no one greater than You
Let my life forever praise the glory of Your name
There is no one higher than You,
There is no one higher than You.
