For the Needy

Give us this day our daily bread,” (Matthew 6:11, ESV)

I have heard many people say I don’t pray for myself. I don’t want to waste God’s time on my problems. I pray for others.

This comes from either a prideful impulse or a lack of understanding on the character of God. God is Omniscient and Omnipotent He can hear and move on an infinite level.

Here Jesus stated that we are to pray for our daily bread, that which we need for life every day. Metaphorically it is more than just food. Remember that God sent manna from heaven to sustain the Israelites. Jesus referred to Himself as the manna from heaven who gives and sustains life.

“I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” (John 6:35, ESV)

Jesus sustains life, our physical and spiritual life. He is the bread of life.

The word of God is also bread for us. In the soup kitchen my former church ran, I would always preach the word of God first then we would feed the group.

“It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” (Matthew 4:4, ESV)

We have many needs in life, material needs – Emotional needs – Relational needs – Spiritual needs and others. God wants us to trust Him for all of these. He provides for them and gives us guidance in all of them for life. So, when we pray let us speak to God regarding our needs and look to Him to answer in accordance with Hi perfect will.
