Reign Now

Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10, ESV)

We live in an ideologically divided world. In our country the division is seen in moral choices. The issue is one of truth and authority. Some see that man is the supreme authority over all and others see that God should have supreme authority.

Within this division, there is a battle for truth. Does man determine what truth is or does God? The view of professing Christianity should be that God is the sole determiner of truth, that it is absolute, and that it is clearly delineated in the Scriptures.

However even within professing Christianity there is division. Some professing Christians will say that the entirety of the Bible is not true, that some of the moral values in it are not true or that truth has changed in some way. Ultimately the views that truth has changed or that it is not absolute leaves society in a tenuous state.

Here are the issues. If there is no absolute truth then everyone can establish their own values for right and wrong. This leads to societal disfunction. So, there must be a standard. Yet how can a standard be established? Will government be the answer? This would only work if government was run by perfect people, which it is not.

Could the majority through democratic processes establish the truth? No. What if the majority gets it wrong? Historically we have seen the majority making poor choices.

The only hope of establishing unflawed truth is to have one establish it who is above all, who is of supreme impeccable character, and who is the embodiment of truth. No person in flawed humanity fits this standard and thus no human being can establish truth.

Truth is divine. It is beyond man’s finite imagination. It is seen only in God who is infinitely perfect in every way. He has revealed His divine standard, the truth in His word, the Bible.

True believers long for the reign of God to come in our divided world. Thus, we pray, “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10, ESV)

The word translated as “kingdom” refers to a sovereign rule. We long for the time to come when a reign of truth and righteousness will prevail. Our prayer is for God’s absolute sovereign rule to be established. With this reign we will experience His perfect will on earth.

While this is a prayer for something to happen in the future, there is a present reality. God reigns in the heart of every true believer. We should also pray for ourselves to be more fully surrendered to His sovereign reign in our own hearts. Moreover, we should pray for Him to bring others to experience the blessing of salvation by faith in Christ, thus entering His kingdom.
